Birkenhead is the heart of the lower North Shore perched on a hill, overlooking the Waitemata Harbour. This coastal aspect combined with an abundance of native bush gives a distinct New Zealand feel to the area. Accessible via the first two exits north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge, Birkenhead is just a short dash from Auckland's city centre. The area also boasts good public transport and a ferry service across to downtown Auckland.
Driving tips
Exit Highway 1 (Direction North) at Onewa Road (Exit 421) and follow the urban route (27) for approx 2.5 km (Note! For a better trafficflow one lane is reserved for public transport and vehicle with 3 and more passengers from Mo-Fr 16-19h). Drive past the Highbury Shopping Centre and go straight ahead (Highbury Bypass, Mokoia Road, Waipa Street) for another 2 km. Turn left into Kauri Road (sign "access to Hebe Place" and 'Fernglen Gardens') and follow the steep drive all the way down and up again into Hebe Place. Go past the turning bay (here you'll see our sign) and you'll find Fernglen B&B, the second house on your right. Please see the map for our position on the globe.
In Walking Distance
There are a few options which are in walking distance from Fernglen B&B. Well worth a visit is Fernglen Gardens just up the road. Fernglen is devoted solely to the growing and preservation of New Zealand. The gardens consist of approximately 9 acres of Kauri Association bush with roughly half an acre under cultivation. Well maintained walking tracks provide an excellent opportunity to observe many interesting species including kauris and ancient rimus clothed in epiphytes. Native bird species you might see include Rirorio (Grey Warbler), Pipiwharauroa (Shining cuckoo), Kereru (wood pigeon), Tui, Tauhou (Silvereye) and Ruru (Morepork).
